CHAPTER NINE

Storm led us through a part of the basement I had never seen. It seemed we were headed further underground. After a five-minute walk, we stepped through a metal door that was guarded by a tough-looking man and woman. Every inch of their bodies was covered in tattoos.

“Why all the ink?” I asked Storm once we were far enough away not to be overheard. We were officially back in the cold, smelly tunnels.

“You don’t like tattoos?” he asked in a judging tone.

“It’s not that. I just noticed that all the guards are covered in them. Is that a Grounder thing?” I swore as I stepped into a puddle that was deeper than I thought.

Storm failed at hiding a smirk. “Grounders use body art as a way of telling their stories. It’s like a modern version of caveman drawings.”

“So why don’t you have any? Don’t you have a story to tell?” I hadn’t seen much of his body, but what I had seen had been ink-free.

“What makes you think I don’t have any?” he asked.

“I don’t see any.”

“There’s a lot of my body that you haven’t seen.” His smirk grew even bigger as I blushed. “Yet.”

Rhys cleared his throat loudly. “What exactly is our plan here? Are we just going to roam the tunnels aimlessly?”

“I’m taking us back to the point where I found you both. From there, we can retrace our steps to where you last saw your friends.” Storm noticed my less than positive reaction to his plan. “What’s wrong?”

My mouth felt very dry and I started to shiver. “That man… The one that I…. Won’t his body still be there?”

“Probably.” Storm gave me a sympathetic look. “I know you would prefer to never see him again, but I do think this is the best chance we have to track down your cousin.”

I nodded that I understood, all the while willing myself to stop shaking. I had killed a man, and now I needed to face that truth.

“Hey, it will be okay.” Rhys reached over and took my hand. It was about 100 degrees warmer than my own. “I’ll be right here with you.”

“You were with her last time, too,” Storm interjected, “and look what happened.”

Rhys’ hand tightened around mine and I could see that he was close to losing his cool. “Let it go, Rhys,” I whispered.

“We should really be moving faster,” Storm said, oblivious to the daggers that were being directed at the back of his head.

“You’re the one leading us,” Rhys said through tight lips.

I had never seen Rhys so mad, nor had I been so annoyed by Storm’s arrogance. The two of them were not the best people to be stuck in a tunnel with. “I’m going to make a suggestion. How about everyone just stop talking and focus on walking?”

Both guys were okay with that suggestion. Now, I just had to do my best to ignore the steady dripping of water and the occasional rat that ran across my path.

“We’re getting close,” Storm said, breaking the silence after almost ten minutes of walking.
